Preparing for Surgery:

We want all aspects of your surgery to go smoothly, so please follow the guidelines below to prevent any delays or cancellations.

  • A pre-op nurse will call you several days prior to your surgery to review your medical history, medications, and give you instructions regarding your procedure. 

  • Notify your Doctor or Healthcare Professional if you develop a cold, fever, respiratory infection or other illness or change in your medical condition prior to surgery.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule your surgery, please call your surgeon’s office.

  • If you are taking a blood thinning medication, check with your physician about stopping it.

  • Make arrangements for a ride home after surgery.  You cannot drive yourself home.  You will need to provide the name and phone number of your designated driver to the admission nurse.   If you are taking a transportation service (taxi, Uber, Lyft, etc.),  you must have an adult accompany you.

 

 

The Day Before Surgery:

  • The surgery schedule is finalized the day before surgery, so you will be notified of your arrival time then.  Arrival time will be approximately one hour prior to your surgery.

  • If you are receiving anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.  This includes water, chewing gum, candy or mints.  Eating or drinking could cause your surgery to be canceled or postponed.    

  • Any prescriptions ordered by your surgeon are sent in advance, and should be available for pick up prior to your surgery.

  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco 24 hours prior to your surgery.

  • Remove nail polish and body piercings before your surgery.

 

 

The Morning of Your Surgery:

  • Leave jewelry and large sums of money at home.

  • Please avoid using facial moisturizers, body lotion, makeup or hair spray.  If you shampoo your hair be sure that it is dry.

  • We encourage you to brush your teeth, however, do not swallow the water while rinsing. 

  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing and flat shoes.  Do not wear any undergarments with metal (i.e. zipper, clasps, clips).

  • Plan to arrive at the time you were instructed to by the pre-op call nurse.  This allows adequate time for the admission procedures.

  • Bring a storage case for glasses, contact lenses, and/or hearing aid.

  • If you were instructed by your physician to take medication on the day of your surgery, take with a small sip of water.

  • Bring your insurance card and a photo ID with you.

  • You will meet the anesthesiologist and see your surgeon before your surgery.  Any final questions can be addressed then.

Following Your Surgery:

  • After surgery, you will be provided with written discharge instructions.  Of course, if you have any questions regarding your post-operative recovery, you can address them with the staff or contact your surgeon.

  • After your surgical procedure, you will remain in our recovery area for approximately 30 minutes prior to discharge.  If necessary, this time may be extended.

  • Most patients have minimal pain post-operatively.  If you do experience pain you may take extra strength acetaminophen.  Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen.

  • A nurse from Eltra will call you after your surgery to check on your progress. 

  • If you have any unexpected problems, please call your surgeon’s office. and not Eltra.  An answering service is available 24 hours a day through the office.  Do not call Eltra, since an answering service is NOT available at that number.

General Instructions for 24 hours following Anesthesia:

  • Have a family member or friend stay with you.

  • Do not drive

  • Do not sign important documents or make critical decisions.

  • Do not operate machinery, power tools or appliances (including the stove).

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages or take recreational drugs.

Instructions For Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty, Entropion or Ectropion Repair, Levator)

You will be given a prescription for antibiotic ointment. This should be applied to any visible sutures and in the operative eye as follows:

·       Two (2) times daily to the operative site.  Once in the morning and the evening.

·       Inside the eye at bedtime

Please keep applying ointment until seen at your follow-up visit, approximately 1 – 2 weeks. Most of your sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following your surgery. Some sutures are dissolvable and those will gradually be absorbed.

 

For 48 hours following surgery, you should apply a cold compress, with white gauze underneath, to the affected eye/eyes.    It should be placed on for 15 minutes, then off for 15 minutes, while you are not eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.  After 48 hours, please continue cold compresses 4 times daily for a minimum of 5 days.  You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you.  It should be chilled in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer.

 

You may shower 24 hours following surgery. You may get your eyes wet, but do not allow the water to directly hit your eyes until they are well healed.  Please pat dry.

 

GENERAL POST ANESTHESIA INSTRUCTIONS:

1.     Do not drive, operate machinery or cook for 24 hours.

2.     Do not make important business or personal decisions for 24 hours.

3.     Avoid any heavy lifting, bending, or strenuous activity for at least 10 days after surgery

4.     You may eat anything you wish following surgery, however most patients find bland foods are best tolerated immediately after surgery.

5.     Do not drink alcoholic beverages for one (1) week. Alcohol can cause additional swelling and slow healing.

6.     Extra Strength Tylenol may be taken for pain.  Take one (1) or two (2) tablets (500mg each) every 4-6-hours  as needed. If you were given Extra Strength Tylenol or Hydrocodone/acetaminophen at Eltra, please see your discharge sheet for when you may take the next dose.

7.     Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Vitamin E for 7 days after surgery.

8.     Sleep with head elevated for a week following surgery to minimize swelling.

Instructions For Eyelid Surgery (Putterman Only)

You will be given a prescription for antibiotic ointment. This should be applied to any visible sutures and in the operative eye as follows:

·       Two (2) times daily inside the eye.  Once in the morning and the evening.

Instructions After Tear Duct Surgery (Dacryocystorhinostomy or DCR)

Avoid blowing your nose for two weeks following surgery. Much of the procedure is done in the nose and blowing may cause excess bleeding. Some light bleeding from the nose is normal for a few days after surgery, but if you have continued bleeding after that please contact the office. Small pieces of soft foam are sometimes used to control the bleeding during the procedure. These pieces are usually absorbed by the body but may be expelled from the nose at some time following the surgery. They look like a small blood clot. This is no cause for concern.

A thin, white tube may be visible on the inner corner of your eye following surgery.  Please do not allow anyone to try to manipulate or pull out this tube. If you notice the tube sticking out more than usual, gently blow your nose and it should fall back into place.  The tube is usually removed 3-6 months after surgery but may be left in longer. You may shower 24 hours following surgery. You may get your eyes wet, but do not allow the water to directly hit your eyes until they are well healed.

For 48 hours following surgery, you should apply a cold compress, with white gauze underneath, to the affected eye/eyes.    It should be placed on for 15 minutes, then off for 15 minutes, while you are not eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.  After 48 hours, please continue cold compresses 4 times daily for a minimum of 3 days.  You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you.  It should be chilled in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer.

You may be given a prescription for antibiotic ointment that you should apply twice (2) daily to the sutures.  If eyedrops are also prescribed, please apply as directed.

 

GENERAL POST ANESTHESIA INSTRUCTIONS:

1.     Do not cook, drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for 24 hours.

2.     Avoid heavy lifting, bending, or strenuous activity for at least 10 days after surgery.

3.     Your diet is not restricted; however, most patients find bland foods are best tolerated immediately after surgery.

4.     Do not drink alcoholic beverages for one (1) week. Alcohol can cause additional swelling and slow the healing process.

5.     Extra Strength Tylenol may be taken for pain.  Take 1-2 tablets every 4-6-hours as needed. If you were given Extra Strength Tylenol or Hydrocodone/acetaminophen at Eltra please see your discharge sheet for when you may take the next dose.

6.     Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Vitamin E for 7 days after surgery.

7.     Sleep with head elevated for a week following surgery to minimize swelling.

Instructions for Resurfacing Laser

Over-the-counter products to purchase prior to surgery:

·       Aquaphor

·       Cetaphil Cleanser

·       White/clear Vinegar

Be sure to pick up any and all prescriptions from your pharmacy.

 

Day of Surgery

Remove ALL makeup from your face before your procedure (including mascara and any facial cosmetics).

 

Immediately After the Procedure

Do not pick or scratch the treated area.  Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor to all treated areas a minimum of 4 times daily starting the day of surgery.  The treated area will darken. 

Do not let the treated area dry out.

Day 1

Shower and wash your face with Cetaphil Cleanser and cool water using a clean face cloth and clean towel each time.  Tilt your head back and allow the shampoo to run down your back, not onto your face. The water may gently hit your face. Your skin will begin to darken.  Begin wiping the area with white vinegar wash at least four (4) times a day, and  continue applying a thin layer of Aquaphor at least four (4) times a day also. If prescribed, take the oral antibiotic and/or Valtrex until completed.

 

Day 2

Wash your face with Cetaphil Cleanser.  Continue washing areas with the white vinegar soaks.  You will notice more brown skin sloughing off.  You will now begin to see some areas appear like a sunburn where the brown has soughed off, this is normal.  Continue applying a thin layer of Aquaphor 4 times a day.

 

Day 3

Wash your face with Cetaphil Cleanser and cool water.  Continue to treat the brown areas with vinegar soaks until they are removed.  Continue applying Aquaphor as needed.  Treated areas should look pink.

 

Day 4

Continue washing face with Cetaphil Cleanser and cool water daily.

 

Post Operative Instructions

·       DO NOT wear/use makeup or any facial cosmetics (including mascara), cosmetic remover, self-tanning lotion or any other product (unless directed) to the affected area until instructed by your physician. 

·       Discontinue hairsprays, perfume, or any product around treated areas for 7 days.

·       DO NOT color your hair for a minimum of 6 weeks after surgery.

·       DO NOT apply heat or hot water to the area for 7 days.

·       DO NOT wear contact lenses for 7 days if your face has been lasered. 

·       Do not let the treated area dry out.

·       Aquaphor may stain, so consider removing quality bed linens and/or clothing.

·       Make sure to sleep on clean bed linen and change pillow cases if they become soiled.

·       DO NOT pick or scratch the treated area.

·       DO NOT SMOKE.

·       Sleep with your head elevated for 7 days.

·       AVOID TOUCHING YOUR PETS.

·       If your chest has been lasered, wear a clean white cotton tee shirt under your clothes.

·       If needed for comfort, place frozen peas in a small plastic baggie and apply to the area. Be sure to place a clean cloth between the bag of frozen peas and your skin to avoid burning the area.

·       Follow up in the office in 1-4 days.  When indicated, you will be given Cu 3  (purple cream) to use in place of Aquaphor.

 

 

White Vinegar Soak Instructions

White vinegar soaks are to help cleanse and soothe your resurfaced skin.

Mix together:

·       One cup of cool water

·       One teaspoon of white vinegar

Saturate the gauze we have given you with the mixture.  Gently press it onto the resurfaced skin and hold it in place for 30 seconds.  Gently peel the gauze off.  Repeat this over the treated areas and concentrate on any areas with a brownish buildup.

Repeat the white vinegar soaks a minimum of 4 times a day.  Keep gauze and vinegar soaks in your refrigerator.  Continue these soaks until all peeling stops.

Instructions for Chalazion Surgery using Local Anesthesia

You will be given a prescription for a small tube of antibiotic ointment.  Once the dressing is removed, this ointment should be applied two (2) times a day in the operated eye for five (5) days.  The ointment will temporarily blur your vision.

 

You should use a cold compress over the operated eye for 48 hours following surgery. You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you. The cold pack should be chilled in the refrigerator NOT the freezer.  The cold pack should be used 15 minutes on, then 15 minutes off, while awake throughout the day for 24 hours.  After 24 hours, continue the cold compress four (4) times daily for up to one week.

 

You may shower 24 hours following surgery. You may get your eyes wet, but do not allow the water to directly hit your eyes until they are well healed.

 

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

 

1.     Avoid any heavy lifting, bending, or strenuous activity for 24 hours after surgery

Instructions For Orbital Decompression Surgery

AVOID NOSE BLOWING for at least 14 days after surgery.

 

You will be given a prescription for antibiotic ointment. This should be applied to any visible sutures and in the operative eye as follows:

·       Two (2) times daily to the operative site.  Once in the morning and in the evening

·       Inside the eye at bedtime

·       You will also be given a prescription for eyedrops.  These should be instilled inside the eye:

·       Two (2) times daily.  Once in the morning and in the evening.

Please keep applying ointment until seen at your follow-up visit. Most of your sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following your surgery. Some sutures are dissolvable and those will gradually be absorbed.

Instructions For S-Lift Surgery 

Apply Bacitracin/Neosporin/or over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to the incision lines in front of your ears  twice daily.  Please continue applying ointment until seen at your follow-up visit.  Most of your sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following your surgery. Some sutures are dissolvable and will gradually be absorbed.

 

For 48 hours following surgery, you should apply a cold compress, with white gauze underneath, to the sides of your face.  It should be placed on for 15 minutes, then off for 15 minutes while you are not eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.  After 48 hours, please continue cold compresses four (4) times daily for up to seven (7) days.   You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you. The cold pack should be chilled in the refrigerator NOT the freezer.

 

Rest as much as possible. Sleep on your back with pillows under your knees and your head elevated.

You may shower and wash your hair 24 hours following surgery.  Be careful not to scrub suture lines during your shower, let water fall gently over these areas and pat dry.

 

Limit phone calls. The phone can irritate the incision lines. You can use speaker phone if necessary.

 

 

GENERAL POST ANESTHESIA INSTRUCTIONS:

1.     Do not drive or operate machinery or cook for 24 hours.

2.     Do not make important business or personal decisions for 24 hours.

3.     Avoid any heavy lifting (>20 lbs), bending, or strenuous activity for at least 10 days after surgery.

4.     A soft diet is best for the first few days following surgery, until it is comfortable to chew.  Most patients find bland foods are best tolerated immediately after surgery.

5.     Do not drink alcoholic beverages for one (1) week. Alcohol can cause additional swelling and slow healing.

6.     Extra Strength Tylenol may be taken for pain.  Take one (1) or two (2) tablets (500mg each) every 4-6 hours as needed.  If you were given  Extra Strength Tylenol at Eltra, please see your discharge sheet for when you may take your next dose.

7.     Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Vitamin E for 7 days after surgery.

8.     Sleep with head elevated for first few days following surgery to minimize swelling.  Use a travel neck pillow if needed.

9.     If you are taking Arnica Montana, continue until swelling and/or bruising subside.

Instructions For Endobrow Lift Surgery

After the procedure we will wrap your head snugly in gauze. This head wrap should be left on for 3-5 days after surgery to provide the best result. You must keep the head dressing dry.   The doctor will remove the head wrap on your first post-op office visit. After this is removed you should apply Bacitracin ointment to the scalp suture lines 2 times daily. Please keep applying ointment until seen at your next follow-up visit. Most of your sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following your surgery. 

 

After the doctor removes the head dressing, you may gently wash your hair in the shower. Be careful not to scrub the suture lines.  Do not use hair products and do not blow dry your hair.

 

You should apply cold compresses over the suture line areas for 48 hours following surgery. These can be placed over the head wrap.  The cold pack should be placed on for 15 minutes every hour, while you are not eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.  After 48 hours, please continue cold compresses 4 times daily for a minimum of 3 days.  You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you.  It should be chilled in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer.

Instructions for Fat Transfer Surgery

Please keep the surgical site/incision clean and dry. You may have bruising and swelling at the donor and recipient sites.  If you have a dressing at either site, it can be removed 24 hours after surgery.  Do not remove the steri strips underneath the dressing, they will gradually loosen and come off on their own.

 

You may shower 24 hours following surgery, after the dressing is removed.  No tub soaking while sutures and/or steri strips are in place.

Instructions For Neck Liposuction Surgery

You will be provided a facial band to wear around the head and neck following the procedure. This should be worn as much as possible for the first three (3) to five (5) days to achieve the best cosmetic result. You should continue to wear the band at night for 4-6 weeks following your surgery.

 

You should apply Bacitracin ointment to the sutures 2 times daily until you are seen by your physician..

 

You may shower 24 hours following surgery. Remove the head garment to do so.

Instructions For Mohs Surgery

You will be given a prescription for antibiotic ointment. This should be applied to any visible sutures at the operative site two (2) times daily.  Once in the morning and the evening.  If the operative site is near or at the eye, you should also apply a small amount of ointment inside the eye at bedtime.  If a patch is applied to your eye following surgery, remove the patch the following day.  Once the patch is removed, begin applying the ointment as indicated above.  

 

Please keep applying ointment until seen at your follow-up visit, approximately 1 – 2 weeks. Most of your sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following your surgery. Some sutures are dissolvable and those will gradually be absorbed.

 

For 48 hours following surgery, you should apply a cold compress, with white gauze underneath, to the affected eye/eyes.    It should be placed on for 15 minutes, then off for 15 minutes, while you are not eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.  After 48 hours, please continue cold compresses 4 times daily for a minimum of 5 days.  You may use any type cold pack that is comfortable for you.  It should be chilled in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer.

 

You may shower 24 hours following surgery. You may get your eyes wet, but do not allow the water to directly hit your eyes until they are well healed.  Please pat dry.
